This is one of the things that can really get on my nerves when reading a DirkJane or DirkRoxy fic. I give fics written early on in Act 6 a bit of a pass, but this is part of Dirk’s character and you just can’t hand-wave this fact aside without expecting a few raised eyebrows. You can write around it, but I think it does these two ships in particular more justice if you write through the process that caused Dirk’s change in how he feels about Jake.
